Melanie and I had an opportunity to visit Lapland over a long weekend. We stayed at the Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort. We stayed for four days and decided to splurge by staying in a glass igloo. We arrived after sunset (3:30 pm) and it was relatively warm (9F) but already getting fairly dark.
On Groundhog Day we had an opportunity to go explore the area and we ended the night with a reindeer sleigh ride.
All reindeer in Finland are owned. In Lapland there are more reindeer than people and they are an important part of Sami culture. The Sami people are indigenous to Lapland so are found in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, The reindeer are an important resource and are also interesting to watch.
If you’re curious the area had about 3 feet of snow with many drifts being considerably higher.
Stay tuned for Day 2+ in Lapland.
